French Toast

Mouthgasmic RECIPES from the Garden

French toast is a crowd-pleasing breakfast (or breakfast for dinner!!) favorite! This basic recipe can be served with the classic powdered sugar, butter, and maple syrup, or you can dressed it up with a number of toppings or stuffings - suggestions follow!

Ingredients:

  • 8-12 slices of bread of choice (we recommend homemade because it's delicious, makes your home smell amazing, and can be cut to your preferred thickness!)

  • 8-12 eggs

  • 1 cup milk or half & half

  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla or almond extract

  • 1 cinnamon stick, powdered

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • ½ tsp ginger

  • Sugar, agave syrup, or honey to desired sweetness

  • 1-2 tbsp butter

  • Toppings and stuffings (optional): butter, powdered sugar, maple syrup, whipped ricotta or cream cheese, peanut butter, Roasted Hazelnut Cacao Spread, homemade Spiced Apple Syrup, marmalade, fresh or pan-fried caramelized fruit, cacao nibs, crumbled bacon

Method:

1. Beat eggs with milk or half and half, vanilla or almond extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, sweetener of choice, and a pinch of Himalayan pink salt to make the custard.

2. Soak the bread slices in the custard, flipping once.

3. Heat butter in a skillet on medium heat, and fry custard-soaked bread slices on each side until golden brown. (Note: if you wish to have stuffed French toast, then lay one slice of bread in the skillet, and top with fillings of choice and another slice of bread, smooshing edges of slices together slightly. Cook each side of the "sandwich" to golden brown!)

4. Serve and enjoy hot, drizzled, shmeared, and topped with whatever yummy goodness you prefer!
