Cayenne Pepper

garden of eden cayenne pepper2.jpg
Named after the French Guiana city of Cayenne, cayenne peppers (Capsicum annuum) are nightshades of family Solanaceae.

Peppers of the genus Capsicum are high in the chemical compound capsaicin, known to cause a tingly to burning sensation when it contacts tissues.

Capsaicin has a number of healthful benefits: it relieves pain, alleviates psoriasis, and has anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and weight loss properties!

Cayenne peppers are light-medium spicy peppers, with a Scoville-scale rating of 30,000-50,000 units. The Scoville scale is a measure of the concentration of capsaicin and other capsaicinoids; in other words, the compounds that give peppers their heat!

Cayenne peppers grow on bushes that can be 1-4 feet tall, and mature from white star-shaped flowers! They are native to tropical and subtropical climates, so they enjoy warm temperatures and lots of sunshine.

Peppers are typically harvested when they have grown to be 4-6 inches long, firm to the touch, with a bright red, waxy skin.Cayenne peppers are eaten fresh, or dried for later use! The dried peppers can be ground into a delicious powder that can be added to a variety of recipes to increase flavor and add numerous benefits to health! We keep it on our table next to the salt, pepper, and nutritional yeast shakers, and use it liberally on dishes from savory to sweet!
