Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast is the deactivated yeast of a strain called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Despite belonging to the same scientific family, nutritional yeast is different than brewer's yeast, which is a byproduct of beer making. It is also different than baker's yeast, which is an active yeast used to make bread.

Nutritional yeast (or "nooch") grows on cane and beet molasses, after which it is harvested, washed, pasteurized, dried, and packaged.

It is a savory seasoning Bon Appetit magazine called "nature's Cheeto dust." Even though it contains no dairy, its flavor is reminiscent of Parmesan cheese! The high vitamin and nutrient content and delicious flavor of nutritional yeast makes it a primo ingredient for vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters alike.

This condiment can be sprinkled on dishes or used to thicken sauces to enhance their flavor and add a plethora of B vitamins and other nutrients! We keep it on hand next to our salt, pepper, and hot sauce, and use it liberally to top savory dishes like salads, meats, and soups. Use it on anything you would use cheese on!
