Adaptogenic Plant
The plant Withania somnifera, also known as Ashwagandha, has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Its scientific name means "sleep inducer" in Latin. Ashwa means "horse" and gandha means "wet" in Sanskrit, presumably a reference that relates either (or both!) to its odor or its purported abilities to impart horse-like strength. This plant is also called Indian ginseng or Indian wild cherry.
Ashwagandha is considered an adaptogen, a non-toxic substance that restore normal physiological functioning when under stress or other unfavorable factors.
Neuroprotective
Ashwagandha is revered across the world and throughout history as a nerve tonic and stress reliever. Research has highlighted the neuroprotective role of Ashwagandha against Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease. The protective effects of this herb are achieved through restoring mitochondrial and endothelial function, mitigation of apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress mechanisms.
Hormone Support
Ashwagandha has been shown to have beneficial effects throughout the endocrine system, the hormonal control system. These effects include modulation of pituitary and thyroid gland functionality, regulation of adrenal activity, and even numerous positive influences on the reproductive system! It is known to lower stress and reduce cortisol as well, all due to a multitude of bioactive compounds in this incredible plant.
Anti-Oxidant & Anti-Inflammatory
Studies show that through ashwagandha's ability to inhibit inflammatory markers such as cytokines, nitric oxide, and reactive oxygen species, it can help regulate mitochondrial function and apoptosis and reduce inflammation. Emerging research demonstrate its efficacy to prevent and eradicate conditions from lupus to arthritis.
Sleep Regulation
Supplementation with ashwagandha has been shown to improve sleep quality and the ability to fall asleep faster, thereby reducing insomnia and negative effects associated with it such as a poor sense of well-being, problems concentrating, emotional disturbances, cognitive disorders, and lack of motivation.
