HIBISCUS
Hibiscus is a flowering plant of the Malvaceae family, which also contains mallow. It grows in warm temperate, tropical, and semi-tropical climates. Hibiscus flowers can grow to be almost 10 inches in diameter and come in a wide range of colors from white to red, pink, yellow, and orange. Butterflies and hummingbirds seem to love all varieties!
Hibiscus goes by other names, too, such as roselle, rosella, sorrel, rosa de Jamaica, sour tea, zobo, and bissap. The flowers can be dried and made into a caffeine-free tea, which has a tart and fruity flavor similar to cranberries. You can add honey, mint, or ginger as you like to change the flavor and boost the health benefits!
The dried flowers can also be used in a number of other culinary preparations! Check out our recipe blog for a very unique and fun recipe for HIBISCUS ENCHILADAS!
NUTRITIONAL YEAST
Nutritional yeast is the deactivated yeast of a strain called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Despite belonging to the same scientific family, nutritional yeast is different than brewer's yeast, which is a byproduct of beer making. It is also different than baker's yeast, which is an active yeast used to make bread.
Nutritional yeast (or "nooch") grows on cane and beet molasses, after which it is harvested, washed, pasteurized, dried, and packaged.
It is a savory seasoning Bon Appetit magazine called "nature's Cheeto dust." Even though it contains no dairy, its flavor is reminiscent of Parmesan cheese! The high vitamin & nutrient content, 9 essential amino acids, and delicious flavor of nutritional yeast makes it a primo ingredient for vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters alike.
This condiment can be sprinkled on dishes or used to thicken sauces to enhance their flavor and add a plethora of B vitamins and other nutrients! We keep it on hand next to our salt, pepper, and hot sauce, and use it liberally to top savory dishes like salads, meats, and soups. Use it on anything you would use cheese on!
Here's an easy recipe that utilizes nutritional yeast to make a delicious VEGAN CHEESE SAUCE!
BLACK PEPPER
The black pepper plant is a perennial, woody, climbing vine that can reach heights of 33 feet tall!
Its scientific name is Piper nigrum, from the family Piperaceae. Its distinctive spicy, pungent, biting flavor is derived from the chemicals piperine, piperidine, and piperettine.
Originally native to the Malabar Coast of India, the pepper plant is cultivated for its fruits, AKA peppercorns.
Black pepper plants bear fruit after 3-5 years. When they begin to turn red, peppercorns are harvested and boiled which causes them to blacken. Then, they are traditionally dried in the sun for many days.
Grinding whole, dried black peppercorns yields the dining table staple we all know and love!
We offer both ground and whole black pepper. You can use either variety to make these simply delicious PAPAYA MARINATED BLACK PEPPER STEAKS!
DILL
Dill (Anethum graveolens) is native to the Mediterranean region and southeastern Europe. The leaves, thin stems, immature flowers, and seeds are edible! Its flavor is classic in pickles, or used to season fish, soups, salads, and the wonderfully staple American condiment known as Ranch dressing. Like parsley, it is a member of the Apiaceae family, which also includes cumin, carrots, celery, and anise.
WASABI
Wasabi comes from the plant family that also includes horseradish and mustard. Although it is called Japanese horseradish and shares a similar pungent flavor profile to what Americans call simply "horseradish", wasabi and horseradish are different species thus are NOT the same plant!
Wasabi is made by grating the underground-growing stem (AKA rhizome) of the perennial Wasabia japonica plant of the Brassicaceae family. (Horseradish, on the other hand, comes from the same family but is the root of the perennial Armoracia rusticana.)
The wasabi plant is notoriously difficult to cultivate, and the freshly grated root loses flavor in 15-20 minutes - thus, fresh wasabi is very expensive. Many establishments "fake it" by using horseradish, mustard, green food coloring, and potentially synthetic ingredients. Our genuine Japanese wasabi powder has no artificial colors, fillers, or stabilizers!
Our lovely light green wasabi powder can easily be made into a paste by mixing with water, which is frequently served as a spicy condiment to sushi.
The heat is often described as having the ability to clean out one's sinuses, but the sting dissipates faster than the heat from peppers.
It is consumed extensively in Japan and Asia, and is more and more popular in America as sushi too grows in prominence.
It has been studied extensively over the years, and plenty of research confirms that it is fantastic for supporting and restoring thriving health!
PARSLEY
Parsley, which has the scientific name Petroselinum crispum, is also native to the Mediterranean region. It is used extensively worldwide as a flavor agent and go-to garnish!
It is well known for the following health benefits:

CUMIN
Cumin is a member of the parsley family! It is the dried seed of the annual Cuminum cynimum herb plant, which can grow to be 1-2 feet tall.
The oblong seeds grow from a flower, and they have 8 ridges with oil canals. Cumin seeds are sometimes mistaken for caraway, another member of the parsley family.
Cumin is a staple spice used in kitchens across the world including the Americas, Mexico, Spain, India, North Africa and the Middle East, and is said to have been prized across the ancient world as not only a culinary spice, but also as make up, money, and even as a preservative in mummification!
Cumin can be used as whole seeds, or as a powder. It is a key component in chili, taco seasoning, and garam masala.

CINNAMON
Cinnamon is obtained from the inner bark of several species of trees in the Cinnamomum genus. The bark curls into tubes as it dries, yielding the recognizable cinnamon stick! Cinnamon powder is made by grinding the sticks.
It has been used throughout history as a culinary spice, incense, money, medicine, and even in mummification!
Cinnamon is a beloved addition to sweet and savory dishes around the world. There are several varieties of this warming spice; cassia and Ceylon are a few of the more popular variants.
Its distinctive smell and taste are a result of aromatic chemical compounds and essential oils, including the appropriately named cinnamaldehyde.
PAPRIKA
Paprika is made from dried and ground peppers of the genus and species Capsicum annuum, which includes bell and cayenne peppers. Since a variety of peppers can be used, flavor and nutrition profiles can vary from product to product and amongst sweet, smoky, and hot varieties.
Spicy peppers contain capsaicin, a compound with a number of healthful benefits: it relieves pain, alleviates psoriasis, and has anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and weight loss properties!
Red peppers (which are obviously usually used to make lovely red paprika) are high in vitamin A, carotenoids including beta carotene, lutein, and a variety of other antioxidants!
Antioxidants protect the body from oxidative stress caused by free radicals and reduce inflammation.
Paprika is thought to have originated in Mexico, but now Hungary is the world's leading producer of this pantry staple!
GARLIC POWDER
⅛ teaspoon of garlic powder = 1 fresh clove of garlic
1½ teaspoons of garlic powder = 1 fresh head of garlic
*An average head of fresh garlic has 10-15 cloves
Garlic is a member of the Allium family, and is closely related to onions, shallots, and leeks. It is the edible bulb of the plant Allium sativum.
The plants are whimsical and pretty, with a tight "globe" of small, clustered flowers atop a bright green, erect stem.
Famed for its pungent aroma and delicious taste, garlic has not only been prized in culinary alchemies, but has been used medicinally throughout the ages to treat conditions like asthma, digestive disorders, heart disease, infections, respiratory disorders, yeast overgrowths, tumors, and parasites!
Garlic contains a variety of sulfur compounds, known to have significant properties for protecting and enhancing wellness.
Perhaps the best known of these sulfur compounds is allicin, which also gives garlic its taste and smell! Allicin is anti-inflammatory and a respected antioxidant that can protect the body from free radicals.
Not only is garlic a delicious ingredient to use in cooking, but research shows it is extremely beneficial for thriving health!
Our garlic powder is shelf stable, so it lasts far longer than fresh garlic. It is super concentrated, so a little goes a long way!

CAYENNE PEPPER
Named after the French Guiana city of Cayenne, cayenne peppers (Capsicum annuum) are nightshades of family Solanaceae.
Peppers of the genus Capsicum are high in the chemical compound capsaicin, known to cause a tingly to burning sensation when it contacts tissues.
Capsaicin has a number of healthful benefits: it relieves pain, alleviates psoriasis, and has anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and weight loss properties!
Cayenne peppers grow on bushes that can be 1-4 feet tall, and mature from white star-shaped flowers! They are native to tropical and subtropical climates, so they enjoy warm temperatures and lots of sunshine.
Peppers are typically harvested when they have grown to be 4-6 inches long, firm to the touch, with a bright red, waxy skin. Cayenne peppers are eaten fresh, or dried for later use!
