Colloidal Silver Inhibits HIV Infection

Over 1.2 million Americans are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and there are almost 50,000 new cases diagnosed each year. [1] It is said that if left untreated, HIV will progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Viruses are unable to replicate themselves; they must infect a host cell and hijack its servers to do that. A virus has to first break into a host cell, then trick the host into integrating the viral genetic code into its own. The virus is then reproduced as the host cell continues its normal functions of transcribing and translating its own DNA for protein synthesis. 

Popular pharmaceutical treatments target either 1) the retrotranscription of virion RNA, interrupting the mechanisms of that convert the virion's single stranded genetic code to the host cell's double stranded DNA or 2) enzyme activity, but HIV quickly and frequently mutates past the scope of these expensive, modern pharmaceutical treatments. 

The emergence of resistant strains is one of the principal challenges to containing the spread of the virus and its impact on human health. [3]


Silver nanoparticles of size 10 nm preferentially bind to HIV and prevent the virus from infecting host cells in vitro. ​[4]

​Based on the image above which shows 10 nm silver nanoparticles bound to an HIV virion at regular geometric spacings, the researchers hypothesized that silver nanoparticles bind to gp120 glycoprotein knobs. 

The virion uses these glycoprotein knobs to grab onto a host cell. When silver nanoparticles preferentially bind to the knobs, the virion has no "hands" to grasp a host cell.

By blocking entry to the host cell, the possibility of viral assembly is completely eliminated! There is no way to read the viral genetic code without accessing the host's DNA, thus replication is impossible. Further, mutation cannot happen, so the virus can't evolve past the scope of such treatment.

This suggests that 10 nm silver nanoparticles (as found in The Garden of Eden's Colloidal Silver) might be MORE EFFECTIVE than popular drug treatments. 


Building on this information, researchers hypothesize that silver nanoparticles inhibit HIV infection at an early stage either by inhibiting viral entry or by acting as a virucidal agent, and that silver nanoparticles are also effective at post-entry stages of the HIV life cycle. [3], [5]

The researchers concluded that silver nanoparticles are "a broad-spectrum agent not prone to inducing resistance that could be used preventively against a wide variety of circulating HIV-1 strains." [3]
