As we continue our in depth look at the element mercury and how it negatively impacts health, we want to help people identify if they are experiencing poisoning by this heavy metal.
Our previous post on this issue, we discussed the very common dental practice of using mercury in amalgam fillings -- which is now one of the biggest if not the biggest threat to health and a huge source of exposure for millions of people. If you are dealing with this and want your fillings out, please read our post on safe removal or replacement protocols.
Other sources of mercury exposure can come from coal mining, all seafood (fish, shellfish, supplements, etc) in the form of methylmercury, some meats and dairy if the animal was fed contaminated grains, household objects like light bulbs and thermometers, some food additives, vaccinations and prescription drugs, fetal and postpartum exposure via mother, and last but not least our water and air supply.
Now let's take a look at some of the signs and symptoms of mercury toxicity to clue you in on potential issues you might be facing.
How you are affected depends on how you were poisoned. An acute case of mercury poisoning via vapors will cause different issues versus prolonged exposure via a food or dental source. With that said, please keep in mind that mercury can adversely hinder so many of the different body systems that not all people will experience all or any of the same symptoms.
Unfortunately, this is part of the reason it is hard for people with mercury toxicity to be taken seriously via the mainstream medical community, because when you express distress with more than one body system at a time you are often considered a hypochondriac or told it is psychosomatic.
For these reasons, please keep in mind that the list below is far from comprehensive.
Elemental mercury toxicity (mostly occurs from vapor exposure) can cause:
- Mood swings
- Other emotional changes
- Abnormal sensation
- Muscle twitching
- Muscle atrophy
- Decreased cognitive functions
Organic mercury toxicity (usually from ingestion) can cause:
- Impaired neurological development
- Peripheral vision impairment
- Stinging or needle-like sensations in the extremities and mouth
- Loss of coordination
- Muscle weakness
- Other impairments of speech and hearing
Extended exposure to mercury can cause chronic disease:
- Neurological disorders
- Cardiovascular disease
- Metabolic syndrome
- Chronic fatigue
- Adrenal and thyroid problems
- Autoimmune disorders
- Digestive disorders
- Chemical sensitivities
- Mental illness
- Sleep disorders
- Chronic infections such as Lyme and Candida
As you can clearly see, mercury can have devastating effects on health; the damage depends on length and type of exposure.
If you have experienced any of these signs or chronic conditions and you know or suspect you have been exposed to mercury in any of the forms listed above, please find a quality and competent care provider who has experience with mercury related issues that can help you work on clearing your current exposure and detoxing any mercury you may have stored in your tissue/cells.
Whether you have mercury poisoning or not, please consider supplementing with nascent iodine!
IODINE is a required nutrient with many important functions in the body, just one of which is detoxing heavy metals like mercury!
If you have enough iodine in your system (95% of the population is deficient in this vital nutrient, so chances are you don't have enough iodine), not only does it help detox mercury build up, but it protects your from further exposure. Given the numerous sources of mercury contamination in the modern environment, it makes sense to protect yourself with iodine. Plus, you need to have this element in your body anyway to regulate metabolism, create hormones, and generally keep the body healthy. Learn more about nascent iodine here.
We hope this will inspire you to do additional research and work towards the best possible health for yourself!
